Is Agile Lipstick on a Pig?

Hanging out with another Agile coach and we were discussing whether Agile is, at the end of the day, just lipstick on a pig for most companies.

Is implementing Agile at large enterprises an endeavor doomed to fail for most companies?

You know, I’m getting ready to blog about something related to Unit Testing, and I thought the other day, that, unit testing (which is not stress testing), is sort of like driving your car to the hot dog stand to give you the (false) assurance it will make it to the grand canyon and back.

But yeah, agile, tdd, etc, is lipstick on code-‘n’-fix with zen koans to distract the audience.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it is doomed to fail in most enterprises, it should help any company develop software at least a little bit better. But unless there is a commitment at all levels towards a radical shift in mindset, you will end up with little islands of agile software development whose gains in productivity and quality get swallowed up in the dysfunctional sea of the wider organisation.
